Auction terminology

Key terms explained.

Reserve Price

The minimum price a seller will accept. If bidding doesn't reach the reserve, the item doesn't sell.

Buyer's Premium

A percentage added to the winning bid that covers auction costs. The rate is published on every auction before registration, so you always know what you'll pay.

Hammer Price

The final bid amount when the auctioneer says "Sold!" Your total cost is the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium.

Bid Increment

The minimum amount by which the next bid must exceed the current bid. Increments increase as the price goes up.

Bid Extension

In timed-online auctions, a bid placed near closing time automatically extends the timer, typically 2-3 minutes, to prevent sniping.

Absentee Bid / Max Bid

Set your maximum amount and the system bids on your behalf, only using what's needed to stay in the lead up to your limit.

Consignment

When a seller places their equipment with an auction company to sell on their behalf, typically at a scheduled multi-seller event.

Absolute Auction

An auction with no reserve. The item sells to the highest bidder regardless of price, creating maximum urgency and competition.
